About
Scholarship, impact, and intellectual focus
Dr. Joshua Wilson's scholarship has helped shape the field's understanding of automated writing evaluation and the effective use of AI in writing instruction and assessment. Across his body of work, he has helped shift the conversation from whether machines can score writing to a more consequential question: how automation and AI can be used to improve the assessment, teaching, and learning of writing in real-world classrooms. His research has strengthened the evidence base in this area while also clarifying both the promise and the limits of these tools. A distinctive contribution of this work is its demonstration that the value of these tools depends not only on what they can do technically, but on how they are taken up by teachers and students and whether the surrounding classroom and school conditions allow them to support meaningful learning. Collectively, his scholarship has helped educators and researchers think more clearly about how intelligent tools can support writing development in ways that are pedagogically sound, instructionally meaningful, and responsive to the complexity of student writing.
